Set service categories
Choose the categories that apply to a service so Coverage derives the right service type and the standards that apply.
Coverage uses a category-based selector, aligned to the government's registration model, to work out each service's type and the standards that apply to it. Choosing the right categories keeps a service's compliance requirements accurate.
Before you start You'll need Manage Services access. This setting is in the Edit a service (or Add a new service) modal, in the Category and service type section.
Choose a service's categories
- Go to Manage → Services.
- Select Edit on the service you want to update (or start Add a new service).
- In Category and service type, open the selector and choose every category that applies:
- Category 1: Home and community services
- Category 2: Assistive technology and home modifications
- Category 3: Advisory and support services
- Category 4: Personal and care support in the home or community
- Category 5: Nursing and transition care
- Category 6: Residential care (including respite)
- If you're unsure which categories apply, use the Learn how link to open the government registration-model handbook.
- If you select Category 4 on its own (not with Category 5 or 6), answer the follow-up: Does the category 4 service provide Care management or Restorative care management services?
- Select Save service.

How categories map to service type
- Selecting any of Categories 1–5 sets the service type to Home and Community.
- Selecting Category 6 sets it to Residential.
- Category 6 is mutually exclusive with Categories 1–5: choosing 6 clears 1–5, and vice versa.
Selecting Category 4 alone reveals the care-management question.
Tip The category you choose determines which standards are enabled for the service, so this is a compliance setting, not just a label. Take a moment to get it right.
Good to know
- Existing services were migrated automatically: those previously tagged Home care (now Home and Community) map to Categories 1–5, and Residential services map to Category 6. Check that each service now shows the correct, more granular category rather than relying on the migrated default.
